The Human Toll (Land being taken away from farmers to build car factories)
Chapter Four (of five chapters) featured on National Geographic’s website, provides an intimate look at a new superhighway linking its four major cities bringing the old and new India into jarring proximity with its complications. Farmers and villagers in Singur district near Calcutta, clash with West Bengal police near the Tata factory grounds. The farmers did not agree to give up their land for compensation so the government confiscated the land anyway, attacked and built a wall to keep them out.
